Introduction
The National Asian Languages and Studies in Australian
Schools (NALSAS) Strategy was a cooperative initiative of the Commonwealth,
State and Territory Governments. It was developed in response to the Council
of Australian Governments (COAG) Working Group on Asian Languages and Cultures
report, Asian Languages and Australia's Economic Future, which was
endorsed by the Prime Minister, Premiers and Chief Ministers at the COAG
meeting in Hobart on 25 February 1994.
Objective
The NALSAS Strategy assisted government and non-government
schools to improve participation and proficiency levels in language learning
in four targeted Asian languages Japanese, Modern Standard Chinese,
Indonesian and Korean, and to support the studies of Asia across the curriculum.
The Strategy aimed to support enhanced and expanded Asian languages and Asian
studies provision through all school systems in order to improve Australia's
capacity and preparedness to interact internationally, in particular, with
key Asian countries. The four languages were chosen on the basis of regional
economic forecasts made by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Collaborative Projects
Approximately 5 per cent of the Commonwealth's funding contribution was set aside to fund specific projects. National collaborative projects focussed on new curriculum resources, professional development and research will continue to be released for schools till 2005 (see What's New Languages, What's New Studies of Asia).
Funding
The resources committed to the NALSAS strategy by the Australian Government, and State and Territory Governments were substantial.
From 199495 to the end of 2002, the Australian Government provided over $208
million to support the Strategy. The Australian Government continues to support the Asia Education Foundation (AEF) with an annual core grant of $1.2 million to promote and support studies of Asia across all curriculum areas.
