The model used in this unit assumes that students are able to work easily in groups and independently. Some of the skills necessary for the unit to succeed include cooperative and independent work skills, and problem-solving and decision-making skills. As a result, this unit may be best taught later in the school year when students have had experience of these skills in other contexts. Should you plan to teach it early in the year you may need explicitly to teach the necessary skills at stages along the way. Some of the tasks, such as letter writing, journal writing and making posters, could be undertaken in English time. The nature and extent of the class project will also impact on how much time needs to be allowed, particularly for Focus questions 3 and 4.
