Activity 4: Ray paths** Overall management

To be able to invent and design a new piece of optical equipment, it is essential to understand how light rays are reflected.
Can you use the law you investigated in Activity 3?

What to use
The Law of reflection, 'Predicting ray paths' sheet.

Law of reflection
The law of reflection
When a ray of light is reflected, the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.

What to do
Hint: To do this activity, you will need to draw in (or imagine) the normal at the point where each ray hits the mirror. This has been done for the ray shown in the information box. The normal is an imaginary line at right angles to the mirror surface.

  1. Hints Using the Law of reflection, complete the diagrams on the Predicting ray paths sheet to show what happens to the light rays in each case.
  2. You could test your prediction using a light box.
