How much heat energy can be released by mixing two chemicals and releasing the chemical energy held in them?

What to use
Methylated spirits, water, 100 mL measuring cylinder, thermometer.
What to do
  1. Place 10 mL of methylated spirits in a 100 mL measuring cylinder.
  2. Use a thermometer to record the temperature of the methylated spirits.

  3. Place 20 mL of water in another measuring cylinder. Measure its temperature.
  4. Slowly add the water to the methylated spirits and observe the temperature of the mixture as you gently stir it.

  1. What was the change in temperature?
  2. For the temperature to change, heat energy must have come from somewhere. What form of energy was changed into heat energy when the liquids were mixed?
