About ScienceLynx

History

This website was initially proposed to host the CASSP Energy and Change Professional development resource. The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) kindly provided extra funding to allow the construction and maintenance of a science web portal for an initial three year period.

  • Curriculum Corporation products

Curriculum Corporation has developed and hosted a number of science resources. Currently available are Energy and Change, Science Education Assessment Resoures (SEAR), VET in Schools: Laboratory Operations, Assessment for Learning and a number of catalogue resources. All are available from the ScienceLynx homepage, and further resources are due to come online soon.

Another Curriculum Corporation resource you may already have in your school are SCIS website catalogue records - ask your librarian about these.

Curriculum Corporation also maintains an up-to-date web page that links to all State curriculum frameworks.

  • The Links pages

During the preparation of this resource, many science-related websites were examined. While most searches return numerous hits, there was much repetition and a rather large amount of relatively poor and often out-dated material ‘out there’. Further, one can spend hours merely moving from one links page to another!

Consequently, ScienceLynx pages will contain relatively few, high quality science resources. As indicated in the link captions, some resources will be teacher-oriented (professional development), while most will also be suitable for student use.

Most, but not all, of the linked resources and many more can be located using the EdNA search engine, for which direct links have been included. These direct links have been implemented following the instructions from the EdNA Developers web pages – add them to your own website.

Here you will find teacher professional development (PD) on effective teaching for Year 9 students in the Energy and change (physical science) strand. The PD ideas are supported by a Year 9 Light, Electricity and Energy student resource with student information and worksheets.

This project, ‘Energy and Change’ implements the Collaborative Australian Secondary Science Project (CASSP) model of teacher PD.

The development of all materials in the Energy and Change resource was funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training under the Quality Outcomes Programme.

The Science Education Assessment Resources (SEAR) provides a wide range of assessment resources (or ‘tasks’) suitable for use across the compulsory years of schooling. SEAR also contains general information about science assessment and links to other teacher resources, key documents and the various State and Territory curriculum frameworks. The resource is complete and awaiting Ministerial approval for release.

The purpose of the Assessment for Learning website is to promote the use of assessment for learning practices - that is, that assessment should occur as a regular part of teaching and learning and that the information gained from assessment activities can be used to shape the teaching and learning process. To illustrate and encourage the use of assessment for learning, teachers are provided with a number of assessment tasks, annotated worksamples and complementary professional development modules. You must login to the website to access the science assessment tasks and worksamples.

Science EdNet is part of the Curriculum Communities project. This project has been developed to help primary and secondary Science and Literacy educators gain confidence in using the Internet. The project is now online.

Science EdNet website contains a modular online tutorial that you can work your way through at your own pace. Whether you are a complete novice or a practised Internet user, the tutorial is structured so you can pick and choose topics to increase your Internet skills. Task-based exercises help you learn by experience. You will find the many links to Science and Literacy resources useful long after you have completed the tutorial.

At Science EdNet you can join a moderated online discussion group to engage with your peers. The website directory will provide you with invaluable electronic resources and the noticeboard will keep you informed of events. You will find useful links to education systems and discussion groups.

Unfortunately, the contents of this website are now out of date and no longer available.
