Curriculum Corporation and Lothian Books have launched this package of books of differing genre in the expectation that this selection will appeal to and engage both the experienced and the reluctant reader. The REL concept involves two specially selected packs of five books (one upper primary and one lower secondary). Each new title reflects aspects of everyday life and has been selected to give young readers the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate a wealth of writing styles by Australian writers. Topics covered in these books allow students to understand and empathise with different characters as they explore what it is to develop a sense of identity or adopt worthwhile personal values. The range of books includes a work of non-fiction, a picture story book and short novels in the detective fiction and modern narrative genre. Online support is offered to teachers through carefully crafted and related student activities and an assessment checklist. A unique certificate has been created for teachers to download. This serves as a record of individual student understandings and the learning outcomes achieved.
