OPAL Japanese Index CD-ROM
The OPAL Japanese Index CD-ROM has been developed to support OPAL Japanese , a comprehensive language program, designed specifically for teachers. Using print and multimedia resources, OPAL Japanese allows interwoven and meaningful study of Japanese language and culture. Learning materials are available for independent study or as part of a postgraduate degree. More information about OPAL Japanese can be found on the Open Learning Australia website . The Index CD-ROM allows teachers to search the entire collection of OPAL Japanese resources to locate specific exercises, activities, cultural notes and grammatical points. This will enable teachers to purchase the right CD-ROMs, Guide Books and Workbooks for their needs. A free copy of the Index CD-ROM can be ordered from Open Learning Australia (OLA) at http://opal.ola.edu.au.

Using the LOTE Planning Framework
The LOTE Planning Framework package is intended to provide
information and assistance for those working towards the development of
effective and sustainable LOTE programmes in schools. It was initially designed
to be used as part of professional development programme for external consultants
working with schools to implement or improve their LOTE programmes. The
package may be used as a self-help manual for schools in making decisions
about their LOTE programmes. However, it is most effectively used in conjunction
with a consultant.

FLOTE
FLOTE (Facilitating The Learning of Languages Other Than
English) offers online professional development for all educators wishing
to develop or enhance their knowledge of how to facilitate the learning
of second or foreign languages. FLOTE is a collection of modules designed
to address language teaching and learning.
The FLOTE approach to language teaching and learning
The FLOTE approach enables teachers and participants
to share in the experiences of others, to reflect on their own practices,
and to access and use the varied handy hints and ideas in relation to
the teaching of languages. All the experiences offered through the FLOTE
modules are anchored to a belief in a constructivist approach to learning
and teaching, through fostering practices to ensure that language learning
is a cumulative experience for learners, and through seeking to highlight
the connections between the development of first and second language literacy
skills.
Programme structure and components
FLOTE modules can be studied as components of a full
languages methodology training programme, as modules or units of a higher
degree programme, or as professional development modules.
What teachers have said about FLOTE
'I feel as if I am teaching better and the students are
getting it … FLOTE works.'
'I feel confident that this course has helped me become
computer literate and gutsy enough to take on the technology and not
be put off by other people's techno talk.'
'I think doing FLOTE has increased my awareness of my
role in making LOTE work in the school and that I need to get staff
involved and informed about the purpose of LOTE.'
'More organised, better informed theoretically, more able
to use technology, ready to be involved in student-directed learning,
able to use and create a SAC. Better able to make a lesson plan with
objectives and student needs as a priority. Better able to use realia
and organise classes around multi-modal and multi-textual realia. I
listen more. I understand why classroom teachers feel threatened by
innovative approaches and language teachers.'
