Awareness, Mystery and Value: A resource for teachers of religious education and values education. This resource includes nine modules, such as Experience and Belief, Human Beings and the Environment, Expressions of Belief, What Do People Believe? and What’s to Be Done? Each module has lesson plans for major subjects of the curriculum. Currently most of the material submitted is in the first two modules.

Understanding Values Education in the Primary School: A summary of the report of research carried out by the Scottish Council for Research in Education (SCRE), which finds, ‘Teachers agree with parents that the ultimate responsibility for the development of children’s values lies with parents. However teachers also recognise that they themselves have an important role to play and that fostering values is integral to what goes on in the classroom’. These are among the conclusions to emerge from a two-year study of values education in primary schools conducted by researchers at the SCRE and funded by The Gordon Cook Foundation.

This document is the report entitled ‘Values in Education in Northern Ireland’, published by the Northern Ireland Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (NICEA). The project aims were to research existing approaches to values in education; generate specific ‘profiles’ of values initiatives in education; and evaluate the current provision for values in education in the Northern Ireland curriculum. The document contains a list of organisations and projects involved in values education in Great Britain. There is also a bibliography of values education literature.

The Institute for Global Ethics is a non-profit research and educational organisation based in Maine, and established to increase public awareness and promote the discussion of ethics in a global context. This site summarises the institute’s programs in the education, corporate and public sectors. There are samples from ‘Building Decision Skills’, a curriculum for character education in secondary schools.

A monthly online newsletter, ‘Values in Action’, contains news and documents relating to character education, values education and ethics awareness. Strategies for Empowering Students: The University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service have a section of their service concerned with character education. The Asia-Pacific Centre of Education Innovation for Development (APEID) is a UNESCO non-government organisation. Their work focusses on research studies on Asia-Pacific core values of peace, human rights, tolerance and social coherence, and on aspects of education for international understanding.

Holistic Education Network of Tasmania: The purpose of the site is ‘to discuss the application of the principles and practice of holistic education to teaching and learning for all students’. There is an online newsletter, discussion forum and discussion of principles and definitions.

The role of civics and citizenship education

This site features a paper, ‘Revisiting values education: The role of civics and citizenship education’, prepared for the Pacific Circle Consortium Conference, Mexico, 1998 by John Gore, then Chief Education Officer, New South Wales Department of Education and Training. Read of his experience in 1997 in Oregon, US, during a session specifically targeted at local teachers and wherein they were providing examples of their classroom practice. When asked how they taught values, their answer, ‘we don’t’, stunned a number of overseas participants and resulted in a sharing session about how values are taught in a number of different countries.

Racial and sexual discrimination

Breaking Through is a project that allows students, teachers and families to share stories about racial and sexual discrimination, as well as how they cope with bullying, myths, silence, intolerance, victimisation and stereotypes with others in an anonymous way. Breaking Through is a whole school approach to a safer, more tolerant school environment for our students. Includes links to other relevant sites.
