Linking motivation with training

www.ncver.edu.au/statistics/surveys/sos02/index.htm
The 2002 Student Outcomes Survey collected information about training outcomes for students who completed their vocational education and training (VET) during 2001. The survey collected information about the students’ general characteristics, employment outcomes and satisfaction with the training. This report provides a clear picture of the reasons people choose to study at TAFE and how well they achieve their goals. The findings presented relate only to students who studied at a TAFE institute in Australia.

Investigation into online learning

www.ncver.edu.au/research/proj/nr1F04.pdf
Online learning on location: Perspectives from regional Australia looks at what helps organisations develop their capability in online learning and what helps them develop a strategic approach to offering and supporting online learning. A multi-stage qualitative process was used to gather data from students, teachers, developers and stakeholders active in providing online learning in four regional technical further education (TAFE) institutes in three eastern states. The full report published in May 2003 is available here.

Pathways to knowledge work

www.ncver.edu.au/research/proj/nr0022.pdf
This study, based on analysis of Census data in 1986 and 2000, looks at how the occupational structure of the Australian labour market has evolved over recent years. The study includes a detailed look at occupational change and identifies the fastest growing occupations, as well as jobs on the rise and decline. The central question the study investigates relates to knowledge of work &&150; whether jobs now demand more knowledge of workers and what this means for vocational education and training.

School leavers in Australia: profiles and pathways

www.acer.edu.au/documents/lsay_31_print.pdf
This Longitudinal Survey of Australian Youth (LSAY) Research Report from ACER examines the process of school leaving and the transition from school to post-school education, training and the labour market. A major focus of the report is young people who do not stay on to complete senior secondary school, as this group is often perceived ‘at risk’ of experiencing a problematic transition. The results indicate that during the late teenage years, school non-completers are not unequivocally ‘worse off’ than school completers who do not enter higher education.

The VocEd briefcase

www.cchs.nsw.edu.au/voced
The VocEd briefcase has been a growing facility for about five years. It began as a platform to present VET options to students at Christian Community High School and other Christian schools involved in the Sydney Christian Schools VET Cluster (a joint venture with Mission Australia Group Training). The site has now grown to include a much wider range of VET options and is moving in the direction of ‘vocational learning’ and career education. The site developers believe, ‘as with all things on the net we are just beginning to scratch the surface of what is possible’.

Jobs Alive, supported by the NSW Government’s School to Work Program, is a series of fast paced, interactive motivational career seminars for students in Western Sydney high schools. The Jobs Alive website enables students to meet the real person behind a job by clicking on a job title and reading the career pathway of a profiled worker. The website includes photos of the profiled workers when they were in year 10. This approach helps students better comprehend that these people were once their age, facing the same complex decision-making issues.

Jobs for the girls

www.tafensw.edu.au/nsit/nsijobsforthegirls/
This website shows images of eight young women in their workplaces. The images aim to encourage other young women to take interest and ask questions about the wide range of occupations that exist, thus assisting them in choosing the ‘right’ path towards their future career preference. The website also has a case study on each of the young women, detailing their path into their chosen career. Better jobs and better pay means confidence and financial independence, and this site hopes to interest young women in studying TAFE and university courses that will give them the skills and qualifications they need to pursue their career.
