Student introduction

Why do we need laws? What do we make laws about? Who has to follow them? What have other societies made laws about? In what ways are they similar to or different from our own laws?

Laws are made by parliaments and some courts, and by-laws are made by local governments. How do we ensure that our laws are good ones? How do we reach agreement that they are necessary and appropriate? How do we make sure that people accused of crimes are treated fairly and justly? What happens if a law is unclear or does not work well? In this unit you will investigate these sorts of questions.
