Module 4: Internet communication

Before you begin this module, read the How to use the tutorial section, if you haven't already done so. If you are an Internet beginner and would like some basic tips, use the mouse pointer and click here.

You can choose to complete any or all parts of this module. You can simply follow the tutorial sequentially by clicking on the Next arrow on each page or, if you have limited time, you may wish to only complete the core sections.

Don't forget to take a break every 20 minutes!

In this module, you will:

• learn how to use appropriate 'netiquette' in Internet communication;
• explore how to communicate effectively in a cross-cultural environment;
• learn how to subscribe to and use mailing lists, newsgroups and web forums;
• find out about synchronous communication, such as online chat and video conferencing.

This module focuses on how you can network and communicate with other teachers and interested professionals, both in Australia and internationally. It describes the modes of communication and the issues for students involved in the kinds of collaborative projects investigated in Module 5.

The Internet can be a great method of communication because it is quick and also because it can link groups of people easily. It may not always be the best method, however. Sometimes a simple phone call or regular mail can be more effective than an email. You might like to keep these ideas in mind as you go through this module.
