Module 2: Evaluating sites

Suitable for student access? Core

M2 Task 8 - Essential criteria for student access
M2 Task 9 - EdNA's content standards

So far, you have been primarily assessing sites according to criteria that are suitable for an adult-teacher audience. In this section, you will look at some additional criteria to be considered for sites that will be visited by students.

Think about this from an educational point of view: what are the criteria required for students to derive educational benefit from using an Internet site? (At this stage, do not think about whole-school policies on Internet access. Questions of acceptable use policies will be dealt with in Module 5.)

M2 Task 8 - Essential criteria for student access Core

Refer back to the table of criteria you developed in Task 4 and extended in Task 5 and Task 6. Note those elements that are essential if a site is to be accessed by students.
Add any additional criteria that need to be considered before giving students access to websites.

Help Here are some suggestions for student-access criteria (M2 Task 8 Suggestions).

Read the article, Teaching Students To Evaluate Internet Information Critically, by Bridget Dalton and Dana L Grisham (http://www.readingonline.org/editorial/edit_index.asp?HREF=december2001/index.html).

Develop a one-page handout you could distribute to students to help them assess the value of websites to Visual Arts learning at their particular stage.

Compare your sheet with the printable sheets for students available at Evaluating a Site (http://www.2learn.ca/evaluating/evaluating.html).

M2 Task 9 - EdNA's content standards Additional

The content standards developed by Education Network Australia (EdNA Online) take a slightly different approach to the evaluation criteria examined in the earlier section of this module.

Have a look at EdNA Online Content Standards now. (http://www.edna.edu.au/aboutus/policy/cont_standards.html)

The standards ensure that all websites listed in the EdNA directory and any other content (such as discussion group messages) are acceptable for the school environment and for student access.
